The Night Shift: What are Insects Actually Doing While We Sleep?

While we sleep, nature is hard at work. Flowers open. Moths take flight. Beetles move through gardens. Bats hunt overhead. An entire night shift of pollinators, predators, and decomposers gets to work under the moon and stars.

But what happens after the sun goes down? In Part 3, we’re turning our attention to the invisible work happening in our own yard after the sun sets and why using the right outdoor lighting at night matters. 

Pollination Doesn’t Stop When the Sun Goes Down

When most people picture a pollinator, they imagine a bee or butterfly moving from flower to flower on a sunny afternoon. But pollination is a 24-hour job.

After sunset, moths, beetles, flies, and other nocturnal insects take over. Many night-blooming plants use pale flowers, strong scents, and natural light cues to attract these nighttime visitors.

And their role may be much bigger than most people realize. A 2017 study published in Nature found that artificial light at night reduced nocturnal visits to plants by 62% compared with dark areas. [1]

That means a light shining near a garden may affect more than the bugs flying around the bulb. It may also change which flowers are visited and how successfully some plants reproduce.

As the researchers concluded, artificial light at night “disrupts nocturnal pollination networks and has negative consequences for plant reproductive success.” [1]

Meet the Moth: The Pollinator Hiding in Plain Sight

Moths are often treated as the less glamorous cousins of butterflies, but ecologically, they are powerhouses.

Research from University College London found that moth pollen-transport networks were larger and more complex than those of daytime pollinators. Moths also carried pollen from plant species that were rarely visited by bees and butterflies. [2]

As lead researcher Dr. Richard Walton explained: “Nocturnal moths have an important but overlooked ecological role.”

Moths also support ecosystems throughout their entire life cycle. As caterpillars, they are an important food source for birds and other wildlife. As adults, many transport pollen between flowers while also feeding bats and other nocturnal predators.

A decline in moths means fewer visits to flowers, less food for wildlife, and another weakened link in the food chain.

When a Light Becomes an Ecological Trap

We’ve all seen insects circling a bright outdoor light over and over again. But scientists increasingly understand that this is more than an annoyance. Artificial light can pull insects away from where they should be feeding, mating, pollinating, and laying eggs.

Instead, insects may spend hours circling a light source, using energy and becoming more vulnerable to predators. This attraction is sometimes called the “vacuum cleaner effect” because artificial light can draw insects out of the surrounding habitat and concentrate them around the light. [3]

The problem is not simply that insects are attracted to light. The problem is what they are no longer doing while they are trapped there. A moth circling a bulb is not visiting flowers. An insect pulled away from its habitat is not behaving normally. And when this happens night after night, across countless outdoor lights, the effects can ripple through an ecosystem.
