Lake Superior Academy Inspires Learning With Norb Lighting

At Lake Superior Academy in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula, wellness is woven into every part of the learning experience, from time spent outdoors to the light that fills each classroom.

The Montessori charter school was founded to create a more nature-based approach to education. “We realized there was a large amount of interest in a school that could teach with a more hands-on approach,” says founder Susie Schlehuber. With community support, Lake Superior Academy opened its doors 11 years ago and has been thriving ever since.

Lake Superior Academy’s philosophy supports the whole child—academically, emotionally, and physically. Students spend much of their day outside, while indoor classrooms are calm, uncluttered, and filled with natural materials. Norb Wellness Lighting, designed to mimic natural light, plays a vital role in creating a balanced, focused atmosphere.

Illuminating Learning with Norb Wellness Lighting

The school first used NorbBOTANIC and NorbTROPIC lights in its greenhouse to support plant growth during Michigan’s long winters. Encouraged by the results, LSA expanded Norb lighting into other learning spaces, including a yurt used for library and music instruction. “The Norb lights create a sense of calm, just as we hoped,” says Susie. “Creating a beautiful environment for learning is important, and Norb Lighting has made that possible.”

Supporting Student Wellness Through Light

“Student wellness is not the same as it was 25 years ago,” Susie explains. “Getting outdoors and providing safe, calm environments indoors helps support the whole child.” Next, the school hopes to introduce a LiveWall salad bar under NorbBOTANIC lights so students can grow and enjoy fresh greens as part of their daily meals.

Lighting for Learning and for Life

Susie now uses Norb lights at home as well, including NorbBOTANIC, NorbTROPIC, NorbBUG, and NorbSTAR decorative string lights. “The botanic bulbs produce beautiful plants all through the winter. Our outdoor Norb string adds beauty to our Lake Superior frontage year-round.”
